Excellence Scholarship and Opportunity Programme (ESOP)
Yuhan Wang – Master's student in the Seismology and Wave Physics group – received an ESOP scholarship.
Hello, I am Yuhan Wang from Hexian, Anhui Province, China. I studied geophysics and mathematics at the School of the Gifted Young of the University of Science and Technology of China. During my undergraduate studies I conducted research on ambient noise tomography under the supervision of Prof. Huajian Yao and Prof. Junlun Li.
My main interest is in seismology, and my Master's thesis focuses on the use of new fibre-optic measurement technologies such as Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and transmission fibre-optic sensing. My goal is to explore new data processing methods, invert source properties and image subsurface structures, which could lead to a better understanding of the Earth and its seismic activity.
I first learnt about ETH when I undertook a summer research project supervised by Prof. Andreas Fichtner and Dr. Daniel C. Bowden in 2022. Later I was fortunate to receive an ESOP scholarship and decided to come to ETH, where I am a Master's student in the Seismology and Wave Physics (SWP) group. I chose ETH because there are interesting projects, where I can gain a deep understanding of my chosen topic and at the same time broaden my of view of Earth Sciences.
