Patrick is a doctoral student in the Seismology and Wave Physics group at ETH Zurich. His research involves adapting modelling methods developed in the field of geophysics to improve the imaging quality obtained in medical ultrasound. In particular, Patrick’s research looks to develop robust inversion techniques for imaging tissues that are proximal to bone by accurately accounting for the acoustoelastic effects observed at the tissue-bone interface.

While completing his Bachelor in Geological Engineering (Sci’18) from Queen’s University in Canada, Patrick acquired considerable experience in the areas of tunnel engineering and exploration geophysics. Patrick subsequently pursued a Master’s in Applied Geophysics within the joint IDEA League programme offered between TU Delft, ETH Zürich, and RWTH Aachen. His Master’s thesis project was completed at ETH Zürich (under the supervision of Dr. Christian Boehm and Prof. Andreas Fichtner) and involved using acoustoelastic full-waveform inversion applied to medical ultrasound to image the brain given a set of synthetically generated forward data.
