My Phd project aims to understand how processes in the photic zone of the world oceans control the metal isotope signature of nickel (Ni). In contrast to other trace metal micronutrients, Ni concentrations in the low latitude photic zone are never completely drawn down. My research investigates hypotheses which could explain the heavy isotope composition of this residual Ni pool. Therefore, I collaborate with Tom Browning and Martha Gledhill from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany. The water samples include those collected in the GEOTRACES GP21 South Pacific cruise (20° - 30° S), which will be supplemented by others from the GIO7 Indian Ocean cruise (20° - 25° S) scheduled for November and December 2024.
