Carl is currently a doctoral student in the Seismology and Wave Physics group at ETH Zurich. He completed his Bachelor degree at the University of Bonn in Geosciences with a focus on Geophysics in 2021, investigating pore-fluid physicochemical controls in rock samples with geoelectrical methods. During his Bachelors, he also did a study abroad year in 2019/20 at Kyoto University through a direct exchange. Subsequently, he obtained a Master degree in Applied Geophysics through the IDEA League program offered between TU Delft, ETH Zurich and RWTH Aachen in 2023, writing a Master thesis on full seismic waveform inversion of Europe and Western Asia using wavefield-adapted meshes under supervision of Sebastian Noe and Prof. Andreas Fichtner.

His research focuses on creating physical models through full-waveform inversion. Including ambient noise and interferometry methods to produce global-scale full-waveform ambient noise inversion models at high frequencies. He is also looking into source and path effects in 3-D heterogeneous media through source inversions. This involves computational work focusing on correct data processing, numerical modeling, joint and holistic data assimilation.
