Student exchange
Time spent as an outgoing ETH student at another university in Switzerland or abroad, or as an incoming mobility student at ETH is a formative and instructive experience that needs to be well prepared.
Studying as ETH student at another university: Outgoing
Are you an ETH student and interested in an exchange semester at another Swiss university or abroad?
ETH mobility programmes
ETH Zurich maintains partnerships with selected universities worldwide. Exchange programmes enable students to study at a partner university.
- For Bachelor's students, an exchange semester is possible from the 5th semester onwards.
- For Master's students, only students with an ETH or EPFL (and in exceptional cases University of Zurich) Bachelor's degree can participate in an exchange programme.
The programmes distinguish between departmental exchanges in Europe and worldwide exchanges. Requirements depend on the programmes.
Self-organised exchange
It is possible to study abroad without an exchange programme, for example, for a summer school. However, these stays must be organised and coordinated individually by the student in consultation with the department and the registrar's office.
As a mobility student at ETH: Incoming
Are you studying at another university and are interested in an exchange semester or project work at ETH Zurich?
Exchange programmes
Students from another university who wish to study at ETH Zurich as an exchange student for one or two semesters should have the support of their home university. The home university needs to be a partner university with an established exchange agreement with ETH Zurich. The necessary knowledge of the language of instruction is a prerequisite (German on bachelor's level, English on Master's level).
Conducting a project at ETH
Students from another university can complete a research or thesis project at ETH Zurich as a project mobility student independent of an exchange agreement.
